“COPS

 ARE

 COOL

 'CAUSE

THEY

CARE”

CAMPAIGN

WORDS FROM THE CEO/PRESIDENT:

In working with and for vulnerable populations and victimization, it occurred to me that we have an entire population of people who are prime targets for abuse and victimization and are never recognized as such. We are extremely fortunate to have them.  However, many times they are taken for granted. They are targeted by their uniforms and the authority they carry on their shoulders. We lose many of them yearly to violent crimes. They are our LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS. To them, for them, and in memory of them, I dedicate my “Cops are Cool 'Cause They Care” Campaign.

As the “Cargo Pants Girl” and CEO of From Victim to Survivor,  my commitment towards the “Cops are Cool 'Cause They Care” Campaign is the following:

-I WILL RESERVE five minutes towards the beginning of any of my presentation or workshops towards making honorable mention of the priceless work our law enforcement departments do for all of us daily.

-I WILL MAKE mention of the numbers of law enforcement officers who were killed nationally in the line of duty within that year (as reported on the Officer Down Memorial Page).

-I WILL ENCOURAGE attendees to fill out a section on my survey which leaves space for them to express their thoughts on the following: “Something they would like to say to police officers risking their lives daily for the greater good of others”

-I WILL POST regularly those encouraging comments here on my website so that police officers and others can view them.

-I WILL URGE others to show appreciation and respect toward officers.

-I WILL TRAIN groups directly and in a "train-the-trainer" model so that they will gain deeper respect for our officers.

Working with people who are transitioning from Victims to Survivors, I realize how very important it is to make mention of the critical role that Law Enforcement Officers play in that transition. The Officers are the ones who come out when a Victim is at their most traumatized moment. They are the ones who are forced to be present in a situation that would overwhelm most people. They are the ones that have to make major decisions and document all that has occurred. They are the ones that have to deal with the traumatic call and move on to another call almost immediately with no processing or venting time in between. They are the ones who carry mental images of traumatized victims in their heads when they go home. Over time, those images linger and linger and linger in their minds. And yet, those Officers continue to put on their uniform and go out and do the best they can…for all of us.

Sadly, some citizens see officers and call them “Pigs” or worse. However, everyone must admit that when the going gets tough, we ALL dial “911”.  As "911 users", we pray and hope the Officers arrive quickly to assist us. We must learn how to treat those of such a dignified profession in a dignified and respectful manner, or we will quickly lose such a support system. We must not take for granted these wonderful, self-giving men and women who strive to make our streets safer every day.

Less than a month after this campaign had begun, I realized due to the numbers of officers killed in the line of duty that more than awareness needed to happen.   Hence I created a curriculum to teach people of all ages and walks of life.  The curriculum is one that I can teach directly to groups or in a "train-the-trainer" model.  If someone is interested in having the "Cops are Cool 'Cause They Care" curriculum presented to them, they can reach Melisa Mel via her "SERVICES" or "CONTACT" tabs above.

Below are listed comments received from workshop and presentation attendees.  These comments come from victims, social workers, officers, perpetrators, children, LGBTQ community members, educators, advocates, court personnel, hotel workers, street workers, people who are transient, people in rehab, and people from all walks of life. THANK YOU for taking the time to read their comments and reflect upon them.

These are their responses to: “Something I would like to say to police officers risking their lives daily for the greater good of others”:

-Thank you for protecting us and our communities.  The world is a better place thanks to all that you do.

-Thank you for everything that you ever do.  You help so many people in the world.  We would all be lost without you!

- I would like to say that we are very glad to have people like you!

- I thank you for risking your lives for us and to improve the world.

- Thank you for helping make the world a better place.  Police that risk their lives everyday truly inspire people.

-When you go on duty be sure to put on your vest!  That is the best thing we can do for our families...

-All the darkness in the world can't stop the glow of the smallest of candles.  You are that candle.

-For my brothers and sisters, watch your six.  Keep your head on a swivel on those streets.  Prayers and respect.

-Keep up the good work. We need your support.

-Thank you to your families for their sacrifice in supporting you every time you check 10-8.

-I am so grateful for all that you do for us.  You chose this profession because you care, because you give, and because you want to make this a country where we can live safely.

-Thank you!  "Aheehee!"  (In Navajo) For all you do everyday.  God watch over you and your brothers daily.

-Thank you for all that you do.  You are my heroes!  With great power comes great responsibility...per Spiderman.

-Words cannot express my gratitude for the work that you do everyday.

-God bless you!  There are many of us that see through the bull crap propaganda. Keep up the good work.  We got your back.

-Serve diligently.  With kindness and purpose!

-I support and appreciate all of you.  I feel safest when I see one of you in the road or on the road.  Take care of yourselves!

-Thank you so much for protecting the lives of all citizens!!

-Brother or sister in blue, stay strong in a world of havoc; but know when the world has taken you away, we will back your blue to be next in line.

-I cannot imagine a world without your service. I couldn't imagine being in crisis and not having any immediate support.  Thank you for putting your life on the line to protect others whether they appreciate it or not.

-Thank you.  You put your life on the line for a safer tomorrow.  You are brave, compassionate, and somebody's hero.

-You are the kind and gentle souls who wrap your arms around the victims.

-Thank you for always protecting our lives and safety of the people.

-Hold the line!

-Thank you!  More people appreciate your sacrifice than you know.

-Thank you for the risks you take to keep our communities safe.  It's a bummer that a few bad cops stereotype most of you.

-I apologize for the actions of this generation and cannot tell you how lucky we all are to have people like you protecting us.

-My heart aches for you as I realize after Mel's workshop today how negligent we have been as a society to not stand up for you because you stand up for us everyday while you are out on shift.  I want you to know that I have a deep respect for you.  Be safe.

-Thanks for being the part of law and order that keeps our community peaceful!

-It has never been about us.  We are here because we have a heart to serve those who are abandoned (from a fellow officer).

-Thank you for caring enough about me to risk your own life.

-Thank you for your sacrifice.  As a daughter of a police officer, your family's sacrifice does not go unappreciated.  You are dearly loved!

-Your courage is incredible.  I not only thank you but your families for sharing you with us all.  Without you we would be screwed!

-Thank you for your service and for putting your lives on the line for us citizens each and every day!

-I am an officer too...times are tough, but we are tougher!

-Your willingness to serve puts most to shame.  Thank you!

-Thank you for risking your life daily to protect our community.

-"We see you"

-Love you brothers and sisters.

-You are so very loved.  I am sorry some citizens are not supporting you.  I am so ashamed of them and how they treat you!

-Stay safe, spend time with family and friends away from the job.  There is life away from law enforcement....for your own sanity.

-Thank you for always being there saving lives, helping children, elders and being at their rescue.  They can't defend themselves. Once again, thank you.  Be safe and don't forget your prayers.

-Thank you for all your hard work and dedication to our community, people, and country.

-We have your back (from Fire and EMS)

-Stay safe and don't let the media get you down.

-Thank you!  Keep your head up but watch your six!!!

-Thank you for putting others first and running towards the problem and not running from it.

-Thank you, thank you, thank you!

-THANK YOU in capital letters!

-Some may have taken you for granted - we (my family) are grateful to have you and the service you provide every day.

-Thank you for being that example no matter what you've been through or are going through.  I have much love and respect for you.

-You know, Mr. Officer, I appreciate all you do to keep us safe and wished more people could understand what you are doing for us.

-We need you.  Even when we treat you badly, we need you.  What you do matters.  Even though we act like it doesn't.  What you do matters.  Always remember why you started.

-I appreciate your serving our communities, putting your life in danger to protect others.  My prayers are for your safety and that you can return home at the end of your shift to be with your family.

-Be safe out there!  Don't get too complacent on any call you get, especially sexual assaults.  You never know what impact you have on the community!

-You are doing something good, helping others, and if you feel like you are not appreciated remember there is someone greater than us that will reward you.

-Thank you for your willingness to put others first.  It shows just how much awesomeness you have!

-Thank you! I appreciate ones who go out of their way to help others.

-Thank goodness you are so brave because I couldn't do what you do.

-Thank you for leaving your home and family to take care of my family.

-You are our heroes!

-You are expected to save the world with your hands tied behind your backs and do it with minimal pay!  Thank you!

-There is more good in society. Thank you for allowing all of us to search it out.

-Take time for yourself.  What you do on a daily basis is so appreciated.  Thank you for making the world a safer place.

-We appreciate what you do day to day.

-Thank you for risking your life!

-You are indispensable!

-Thank you!  You are amazing and appreciated!

-There are really no words to express my gratitude.  Know that there are a lot of us that still support the blue.  Thank you!!
